Sundays

As the weather gets better there's more opportunities to paint outside. Businesses have been busy arranging gatherings, music will begin all over town at local parks and you may start seeing plein air painters working on their skills, looking for the perfect site for the local area Between the Bluffs Plein Air Event in October.

Last weekends weather moved me outside to paint at Elmaro Vineyard in Trempealeau. I'm planning on attending their June Sundays Street Market with other artists from the refuge.

From my plein air efforts I experimented and finished these two in the studio.

Hope to see you this Sunday, May 18 from 3:30-5:30 at Old Main Cultural Center in Galesville. I'll be in the gallery during Syttende Mai event.

St. Rose part of Tables of Joy

St. Rose 8x10 oil

Barb had the winning bid on my contribution to Tables of Joy for the benefit of Franciscan Spirituality Center.

As"Art in Action" I painted from a photographic, a portion of the garden outside the chapel, a quick paint from 4:30 til 6 so guests could bid on auction items and then sit down for dinner.

Due to the inclement weather the venue switched from outside in the garden to indoors.  I did take liberties and sketched out my composition and mixed colors on my palette before arriving to be able to finish in time. It would have been fun to paint plein air but as an artist I find I always have to adapt to evolving situations.

Thanks for inviting me to celebrate community with you, Hope.

Dalton the Sleeping Sultan

Dog Tired 8x10 oil revised

Saturday evening at Old Main, I decided my subject matter to paint would be Dalton the 6 year old Golden Retriever that moved in with me and my sister Mary.

In the Gallery before and during intermission for the Eddie Allen Musical performance I began my efforts and will continue to do some final touch ups today for the event Blue Bridge Brass that starts at 3pm.

Dalton, Mary and I will be ther a hour hour before on the lawn painting and available during intermission in the gallery.

You may also see Dalton at Elmaro from around 1:30 for the Dog Walk. A guy like Dalton loves to parade around.

Helping with Memories

Momma Bea's Bench

Some commissions just resonate with the feeling of love and loss. I was approached by Karen to paint this bench dedicated to their mother Bea that sits in the Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge.

A simple setting with a complex story. Maybe you remember her? She was an active volunteer.

Here's to making memories that last.

Thanks for letting me share this Karen.

Karen shared a photo of how she framed it up. Just love it.

A discovery in Fountain City

Urban Sketchers of Bluff Country met at JP's  Kitchen and Pub on Friday afternoon in Fountain City and enjoyed a delicious homemade lunch and time to sketch.

Afterwards we walked around town and instead of finding the local historical center open we went into the Post Office to discover these wonderful paintings. Read on about the artist

Oh yeah, my sketch of some local folks playing bridge. They were very patient with us staring at them. I hope we didn't disturb their concentration too much.

Riggs celebrating Reirement of his mom

While at my first event for Old Main Cultural Center Gallery display I worked on a special gift for neighbor and friend Karen. As of Friday she's now retired and can be a stay at home mom for Riggs.

Here's some of the process for painting this pet portrait. I used my artistic license to eliminate the blanket behind Riggs to see a better outline of his body and less details in the background to make for a simpler composition.

Below initial photo and photos at about every fifteen minutes as each phase is done.

Plus a few details added in studio. I like how my palette also changes with each phase.

Will work on another painting coming up on Saturday, April 12. I'll be there 6:30 until 8:30 pm
