Red Pines

One of our favorite spots. They have a million dollar view at Red Pines on the Lake in Onalaska. Or to be more precise Brice Prairie.
Under the Pines 8x10 oil

It was probably one of the first places we needed to go to after Covid. To sit on the deck, have an ice cold beer and some snacks. Often there's a breeze that takes you to the tropics in the summer time and if you squint the Red Pine trees look like palm trees.

I've been scouting out places to plein air paint and this is on my list some early morning canvas time. This painting is a warm up to the Between the Bluffs Plein Air Event in September.

Holmen Gathering

It's Kornfest in Holmen. We ventured out for a few ears to find everyone in Holmen (I think) out celebrating. Lots of figures and subject matter to be inspired to paint.

Since I've been working on figures I painted this one of a group of young girls poised to eat their roasted corn. The posture and angles were different than unusual since the art of eating corn on the cob, dripping from butter and only a handle of dried stalk to guide their aim creates a challenge.

Happy Kornfest Holmen

I think this one will be added to my collection of paintings that will be on display at the Holmen Library display case in November.

Drawing to the Music of Apollo

Drawn Together was invited to attend a rehearsal by Apollo in Houston, Minnesota today as they were getting ready for the Apollo Music Fest. They are preforming several places including here in La Crosse at Cappella Perfoming Arts Center on Friday Aug. 25 at 7pm.

It was a pleasure to watch musical artists interpret what a composer had in mind. As a visual artist we  tried to interpret their performance.

I used a quick gestural drawing approach to try and give you the feel of the music. I tried to stop sooner than later to not overwork the subject matter. These are listed from last to first so you can see how a style and warming up progress.

Pettibone's Gazebo

Pettibone's Gazebo 8x10 oil
Among the many islands on the Mississippi River, Barron Island home to Pettibone Park lies just west of La Crosse. This beautiful old  Gazebo is fortunately raised up enough to survive the spring flooding. It's copper onion dome has a wonderful patina and the  sandstone sets it off from the greens.

Always wanted to paint this beauty and on Wed. I had the perfect day and company to try plein air.

Fresh off the Easel

I couldn't wait to share, I just cleaned my brushes and had to photograph my latest inspiration from Wed. drawing session.

Sometimes I'm hesitant but I feel much more confident with today's results. I haven't painted for a week since getting ready by framing up pieces for Grounded Patio Cafe and River City Gallery Paint Downtown.

Artist Closing Reception

Thrusday, August 31 from 5-7

 Thanks you Grounded Patio Cafe

Recent Works-is a small collection of paintings that I wanted to frame up and show off. The opportunity presented itself for an opening in August at Grounded Patio, 308 Main Street in downtown La Crosse. Since my paintings are best seen in person, it's a chance to have them viewed. Hope you enjoy.

Between preparing for my exhibits, I often stray to paint some of my favorite subject matter from the past. Alleys and Animals. The La Crosse downtown alleys have always intrigued me. It helps me to work on my architecture and shadows. Just love the age and texture of the patina of the past.

I was painting early one Sunday morning, thanks to Dylan Overhouse for this photo

It's been a goal to do birds and animals. I've had to rely on the generosity of local birders to share some of their photos. Birds always seem to be in motion and are hard to capture by camera. Thanks to Bruce Bartel for using his photo for inspiration to paint eagles.
