Nocturnes-Trempealeau

In my studio painting the dark of night. Lots of room for more dramatic brush strokes and streaking lights. An interesting way to look for color. More on the way.

Capturing a Moment

Brilliance at Dusk 11x14 oil
It was a pleasure to work with Jon and Cara on interpreting their memories of a sunset over Lake Michigan, taken from Holland Michigan

We decided to include some of the people who were witnessing the same event. I think it helped realize the grand scale of the open beach, the vastness of the lake and the brilliance of a sunset.

Along the Path

As I continue my journey of being an artist, the bonus benefits are the bonds you make along the way. I planned on attending the plein air workshop in Winona this past Sept. and saw on the list of attendees another artist I had met at my first St. Croix River School of Painting workshop with Kami Mendlik.

I extended an invitation to her for a place to stay during the weekend. I was thrilled she accepted since I'd have a like minded individual to chat with on the half hour rides up and down the river. It was wonderful, we shared stories and strategies and I felt fully immersed in the world I had chosen. It's great finding your people.

She left me inspired to do better and my walls are graced with one of her paintings. I was gobsmacked at this beautiful gem so I made sure to share it with you. I just love it.

 Mary Lynch - Biography

 About-Mary B Lynch

Mary Lynch’s passion is painting oil En Plein Air. She took her first painting class in 2005 from Susan Hartzell Vannelli. In 2008 fellow painter Kerin McTeigue O'Connor invited Mary to join JunoAvenueArt, a group of artists supporting each other’s  journey, where she explored many expressive mediums. In 2014 she began to study at St. Croix River School of Painting under Master Painter Kami Mendlik, where the core elements are on the fundamentals of representational painting with an emphasis on color. Mary continues to study them. The painters who inspire Mary are John Singer Sargent (American, 1856-1925), Isaac Levitan (Russian, 1860-1900), Joaquin Sorolla (Spanish, 1863-1923), Charles W. Hawthorne (American, 1872-1930), and Kami Mendlik (American).

Mary turned me on to this book for inspiration-so far very good practical steps. Hopefully this will get me on the path to my next show at Elmaro in May.

Brice Praire Inspiration

Blues on the Prairie  11x14 oil

In the Town of Onalaska is Brice Prairie, just a few minutes from my home. I continue to discover new places on the Prairie for inspiration,, it always amazes me how big it really is and how many beautiful areas to paint. From the Great River State Trail, National Refuge and Prairies, to capturing life on the river.

Here's some of my latest paintings inspired by Brice Prairie from the end of summer. Any question cshoreartwork@gmail.com

A favorite place to visit on the Prairie is Red Pines Bar & Grill on Lake Onalaska. The stunning view and welcoming atmosphere make it a favorite spot for a refreshment or meal. I couldn't resist asking Corinna, the owner, permission to paint. Every day it changes and it's hard to say what the best time of year is. With their heated patio, music on the deck

They are continuing to develop the property. I hear you can rent a room in the building next to it and word has it a cafe will be opening sometime next year.

Dazed after Days

Pulling from the Bluffs 6x8 oil

Sweet Sugar 6x8 oil

Below the Loaf 6x8 oil

A quick paint just days after a workshop in Winona. Definitely something different about this one compared to what I've been working on. This was a small vignette I saw while arriving in the morning to the Oberton Education Room for day two of the workshop. I'd never seen this view from the museum and had to grab my camera for a reference photo.

In the two day workshop at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum with Kami Mendlik and Fred Somers, I felt exhausted to weepy and came out the other end hopefully a better artist. It was a journey through learning more how to see and how to feel for me as an artist.

Thanks to the organizers River Arts Alliance, the MMAMuseum and all their connections and passion to bring this Plein Air experience and Artists to Winona. Grateful to Linda Klabo for her pursuit to see art as an integral part of all our lives.

Image below-Fred Somers lead the workshop introducing me to soft pastels. We started off with leaves and I transitioned to fish. Must have been influenced by the current display "Art for Fish" at MMAM.

After 3 weeks of getting outside and focusing on plein air painting I'm now back in the studio getting ready for my show in Winona at the Blue Heron Cafe. Will post more about this January-March show as I get closer.
