Recommendations on safe limits for human consumption of fish, helps protect us from ingesting too much mercury and other toxins that pollute our waters.

So what are the birds suppose to do. They have no choice, no grocery store to go to or favorite fish monger they trust.

Will we have to create manmade ponds and swimming holes so they have a safe source for their survival?

For Millions Too Little Too Late.

 

The extinction of the Passenger Pigeon is hard to fathom when stories of the past tell of the skies blackened when they all took flight.

At Wyalusing State Park in Wisconsin, is a commemorative plaque reminding us of the avarice of man.

I had to look that word up too.

Avarice-noun, extreme greed for wealth or material gain.

 Knock, Knock, Who's There?

As cavity nesters,  woodpecker rely on standing dead trees

 to make a home to raise their young.

 

So maybe next time don’t be so quick,

 choosing to remove old trees. 

 See if you can live with it 

  because some birds can’t live  without them.

Cardinals Appear When Angels are Near

 

Who hasn’t been hopeful after losing a loved one. 

Being able to connect one more time.

Stories tell of cardinals and other birds, plus butterflies 

being the messengers of those we’ve lost.

Their  appearance in our lives 

letting us know everything is all right.

 

A comforting thought when grieving a loss.

Silent Domestic Predation

Silent, because we don’t want to talk about it.

 Domestic, because it’s right here coming from our own homes. 

Predation because it’s in their nature. 

If you haven’t guessed, it’s the little kitty hiding in the grasses,

 waiting to pounce on the unsuspecting  Chickadees.

 It doesn’t matter if they’re hungry, cats are drawn to birds.

Making them one of our greatest impacts on song birds.

Because we can change the outcome by not letting our feline friends outside.

 

I’m guilty.

My Entry for the Refuge Anniversary

 I'm answering the call to artists with my painting above. There's a reception on Friday, May 3 from 4-7 at River City Gallery in downtown La Crosse. The entries will be on display and the voting begins May 3 for favorites from the viewers with 3 $100 awards by people's choice. An award ceremony is planned for Friday May 17 3-5 and the chosen winner receives $1000 for purchase and publication by the Friends of Pools 7 and 8..

 

Lots of other fun activities surrounding the anniversary. I'm always drawn to the refuge and beautiful scenery of our area to paint. It's wonderful to know it's protected

Tonight's the Night-Cribbage Trempealeau Hotel

 Tonight, Thursday, April 18 I will try to defend my title of Cribbage Champ on April 4. Each week a winner is declared and I got pretty lucky for my first time attending Cribbage night. I've been playing on an app since it's been years, back in my college days that I learned from the master Michael Curran.

Will see how well I do tonight. Planning on taking my sketch boo if I get bumped early and hopefully will have willing subjects to pose for me. They sit pretty still while playing for about 15 minutes.

I'll just sip on my beer and be around to see the crowning of tonight's champion. If  add some sketches to this post it means I didn't fare very well. Anyway I'll be sure to have fun.

It's almost time -Here come the hummers.

 Spring is upon us and that means the return of birds. I like to set up my hummingbird feeder before they are sighted so the first ones make their stop at my house and maybe call it home. Usually this is around May first but with all the warm weather and early buds I may have to change my calendar.

 Still working on finishing up for my art show at Elmaro Winery in May. Once that's done I'll be free as a bird to get outside and paint. Can wait!

As La Crosse Society of Arts and Crafts, feathered artist for April and May. I'll also be bringing a display to show you what cold wax is all about for the evening of the Artwalk.  Adding this medium released me from focusing on the details to seeing the bigger picture. Creating more expressive gestures with unexpected textures.
