Special Holiday Guest

We all have that special guest for the holidays. To treat and make their memories with us special. Mine is rather famous, his name is Vincent Van-Dog.

He's here for a week and already had me paint his portrait. Hopefully it will be dry for his family when they return to pick him up.

Yep just like  a celebrity his rider requested a window seat with a view of squirrels by the fire.

Colleen-hope you all enjoyed your holiday company.

Let There Be Light

Let There Be Light 8x10 oil

On Sundays Soltice I got together with artist friends and plein air painted at Kinstone in Fountain City, WI. It was sunny, the ground was covered in snow and the temps were nearing 30 degrees.

It would be my first chance to check out my new vision, as I've just completed cataract surgery. The big question in my mind was would it make me a better artist? Or was everything I did in the past now going to bother me. Well the answer is yes and no. My ability to see colors has definitely changed. I could see it in the whites. I went from incandescent lighting to a florescent tube. Basically everything had a yellowish cast to it before and now wow white was alarmingly bright. I found I was blinded every time I opened the refrigerator. I also had to adjust my smart phone, lowering the brightness at night, so low that when used it outside it was black. I thought my phone was malfunctioning. I hope it doesn't sound like I'm complaining, I grateful for my new gift of sight.

So I celebrate the holidays with eager anticipation to create and capture the wondrous colors around me through my psintings.

Enjoy your Christmas celebrations and safe travels.

I'll be letting this  painting dry and then add it to my collection of Kinstone paintings come spring when they have there opening celebration Sunday, May 3. I hope you'll stop by as I join other artists painting and sketching on the premises.

The last Super Moon of 2025

One of the best parts of painting nocturnes is when we have a full moon. This painting was from Thursday December 4. We had finished up our burgers at Trempealeau Hotel and stopped for a photo opportunity off Hwy 35 on County Rd. M. Maybe you recognized this road

Cold Moon of  December 8x10 oil unframed SOLD

My New Years Resolution is to paint every full moon in 2026. Now the search is on as to where I'll capture if in it's full glory and figuring out when in the nighttime it appears. If it's cloudy out I'll just have to paint what the moon illuminates.

Next full moon painting to follow Saturday. January 3, peak at 5:03 am

A present for me!

My recent acquisition, a painting by Chris Long. More at chrislongpainter.com

I hung this precious beauty just above my monitor. So it's in my site line. You wouldn't even know this exquisite paint is only 3"x3"

He also sent along a sticker which I affixed to the cover of my traveling pochade box so I will always get a glimpse of before starting to plein air paint.

I know I sound like a groupie. I'm experiencing whats referred to as Stendhal Syndrome. A psychosomatic reaction to sublime beauty. I had to look up the definition, and yes this reaction does exist.

Have you ever been moved by a piece of art that can bring tears to your eyes? It's the emotional connection to what the artist portrays. I hope so.

From One of My Favorite Artists offers a workshop

I've admired the lovely looseness and brilliant brush strokes of artist Chris Long. When I heard he had a nocturne, online workshop, I signed up. Since this was probably the closest I would get to learning directly from him. He was covering luminescent moon glows and city night lights.

It was a three hour zoom and we could paint along to learn his process. Below are the two paintings I did from the workshop. As you may have noticed my last couple of posts on this blog have been about nocturnes. I think I may be obsessed with trying to depict night scenes and what illuminates the darkness.

Yes there will be more nocturnes.

Winning Burger

On Thursday nights it's time to play cribbage at the Trempealeau Hotel. This year I haven't been so lucky. My one and only win two weeks ago got me the coveted prize, a ten dollar gift certificate.

So I spent it on dinner for me and my sister. A lovely charred burger with swiss cheese and topped with mushrooms. Plus some salty chips to make my  beer even better.

To immortalize my big win I painted the moment. Plus I love their table candles.
