The Season to Feast

Time to Feast 11x14 oil

This past weekend we went out to see the swans at Brownsville overlook. They've begun their annual migration with a stop for tubers along the Mississippi River.

It was a sunny morning and the blues were stunning.

Hope you enjoy your feast on Thursday. Have a Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels.

Inspired by nephews last years Duck hunting season. They sure know how to have fun. It sounds like an exhausting day out on the water. Then it's time to let loose.

Look What I Did-Oil Painting Class

Stormy Skies 8x10 oil on Aluminum Panel

I just finished up an oil painting class at the Winona Arts Center called Oil Painting 101 . We started in September and once a week we met for two hours learning different techniques and products. I learned a lot and enjoyed the exposure to different surfaces, painting tools and products. Plus using environmentally safe products. Each week everything was laid out for us with all the materials provided. Even better we left with a painting carefully transported in a box provided.

Our facilitator was Casey Wicka (seen in photo), a wonderful artist who created these weekly challenges for us. She shared her wealth of knowledge and love of painting in oils with us. She guided us as well as let us express ourselves adapting her teaching to the variety of artists who attended.

Check out Winona Arts Center for future oil painting classes winonaarts.org

Thank you Casey for the opportunity to learn from you.

Out of my Comfort Zone

Most know me for my paintings capturing the scenic beauty of the Driftless Region. Every time I go out on an excursion I find I come home, inspired to paint what I've seen.

Some days aren't like others and what caught my attention while meeting up with other artists to draw on a farm, was the sight of mouse traps. Many had done their job hence this is what I decided to paint.

A bit macabre, I hope you aren't offended.

To me it's a reminder of reality. We all have a different response to art, tell me what you see or feel about this painting.

Last Days of Color in the Refuge

Color Along the Trail 8x10 oil

As I'm now beginning to paint for 2026 shows I chose this one from my fall photos at the Trempealeau Refuge. I'm looking forward to their annual Artists Along the Trails in early June and all the festivities that go with it at Elmaro.

Blown Away by the Colors

Last Days of Fall 11x14 oil

All the leaves are gone and the sky is gray. Sound familiar. We've passed the peak and I did my best to get out and capture the foliage colors.

I love going out to the Apple Blossom overlook in the fall for the extraordinary view and the golden colors. An annual pilgrimage spent this year with Karen  my traveling friend from Arkansas. The stop in La Crescent didn't disappoint and finally completed the above painting. I hope you enjoyed the colors. My maple tree is now bare as this weekends weather has blown them all off.

Times they are a Changing

Times Changing 11x14 oil and cold wax on cradled panel

October is over and what a month it was. From the Between the Bluffs plein air competition and my year long reveal of my artistic thoughts about Agritourism at Elmaro. It's taken a week to sort out my studio and focus on what's to come.

The above painting was done in the studio featuring the overlook in Onalaska on Highway 35. I'm eager to get back in the studio and experiment with cold wax. I'll begin working on two shows for 2026 and cold wax will dominate for my show at the Blue Heron Coffee House in Winona in August and September. Still deliberating on the title. I'm sure it will come to me as I find my inspiration.

I've also been invited back to Elmaro for a show in October of 2026. Sharing the spotlight with fellow painter Ellen Mc Donah as we capture river scenes in the area. We both enjoy getting out and plein air painting so this years goal will include painting outside in all the seasons to celebrate our rivers.

Hope you enjoyed the fall colors, I now have a boat load of images to get me through the winter.
