Grandads Overlook 8x10 oil

 

Before the competition started for Plein Air Between the Bluffs I joined fellow artists up on the bluff at one of La Crosse's iconic overlooks-Grandads.

A bit buggy, a bit hot, but it was fun taking in the view and talking to folks that were interested in what we were doing.

A few of us also warmed up our palettes at Red Pines on Brice Prairie. shown below.

Overlook on Hwy 35 Decision Made

 It's done. I decided on these three paintings for my entry. I can now rest easy as they dry.

Well really, no rest for this artist as I start to prepared for my reception at Elmaro on Sunday, Oct. 26 from 1-4. My display for "From Tuscany to Trempealeau" went up last week and will be available to view through Oct. 30, 2025. Now to get my house ready since I'll have company for the celebration. Karen my traveling friend will be coming up from Arkansas and my brother Pat and his wife Hen will also be coming from Minneapolis to join the fun. I already can tell you I'll be making Pamela's (From Poggio Etrusco in Tuscany) Olive Oil Cake for a treat at the reception, along with some HoneyCrisp Apples thanks to Ecker's.  Elmaro will help me select some wines to sample with the treats.

Overlook on Hwy 35 Part 4

This is my second painting that will be entered into Plein Air Between the Bluffs. An early morning view at the Onalaska Overlook on Hwy 35. The colors are so pale when the sun starts to rise. Good thing it was seasonably warm at 7am.

 I've painted with cold wax in my oils in the studio but decide I'd try it for plein air painting. It was challenging as I need to let the layers dry overnight, always hoping the next mornings weather would be the same. Luckily I had a couple mornings to complete.

I did need to bring along a table to paint since it takes more pressure to apply. I didn't realize how much pressure it put on my back leaning over to paint rather than standing upright. I'm thinking this maybe my one and only outdoor adventure with cold wax. I still love the effects and will incorporate in the studio for future paintings.

Overlook on Hwy 35 Part 3

 It's the fourth day of the competition and I need a break. I've been to the Onalaska Hwy 35 overlook mornings and evening painting in the wonderful warm weather. Only this morning did my fingers go numb.

 I thought I was so well prepared and never forgetting anything except how much paint gets all over the place.  Many know I'm a messy painter, I do try to keep neat but a stray hair will always result in a swipe of paint across my forehead. 

Taking a break for the next couple of days to see what else I need to do on my paintings.Participants are allowed to submit three and I have four, one as a backup plan.

Here's one that I think is complete to share with you.

More to come in the days ahead. Now I need to clean up my car before the paint dries.

Overlook on Hwy 35 in Onalaska Part Two

 This year I'm going to incorporate cold wax into my oil paint for a different look. I like how thick it makes the paint and the effects that come with it. It requires me to rethink my set up but I'm willing to give it a try .

Below I created these two paintings in the studio refreshing my skills with cold wax.

Overlook on Hwy 35 in Onalaska Part One

 It's been a regular stop after Moon Tunes, we'd grab some ice cream and catch the sunset at the overlook on Hwy 35 across from Blue Moon. This grand view will be my inspiration for the upcoming Plein Air Between the Bluffs competiton starting on Friday October .3. After getting our canvases or panels stamped for competition I'll head over and start painting every day until done. The sooner I get them done the more time to  dry before the turning them in on Thursday Oct. 16.

 Morning, noon or evenings I'll be there as weather permits. You are welcome to stop by, I'll post when I'm there on facebook.
