There's a lot to learn about plein air painting. Nocturne painting is on my list of things to do. This painting is done in my studio from a photograph. Just practicing before I have the chance  to do this outside.

Fortunately there is an upcoming demonstration this Friday in Winona. It's part of Flora and Fauna- the Plein Air Experience 2023. Listed below are the demonstrations and activities. It's amazing to watch these masters do their paintings, a very good opportunity to see for yourself.

I'm excited to be taking the two day workshop with Kami and Fred as well.

 

 FLORA and FAUNA-The PLEIN AIR EXPERIENCE 2023

Meet the artists participating in the plein air invitational exhibition at a public opening reception on Thursday evening. The program will include a conversation with master artists and workshop instructors Kami Mendlik, Fred Somers, and David R. Smith, facilitated by MMAM Executive Director Scott Pollock. A cash bar will be available.

Plein Air Painting Demonstrations by Featured Artists | Friday, Sept. 29 & Saturday, Sept. 30 | Various times & locations in Winona

Eight of the featured artists participating in the invitational exhibition will also give free, public painting demonstrations at various locations around Winona on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29 and 30. The demonstration schedule is as follows:

Before visiting participants head home from Winona, featured artists, workshop instructors and students, art patrons and the general public are all invited to gather once more at MMAM for a closing social. Set up your easels to show off some of what you've learned and created during the weekend! Some works painted in Winona by participating artists during Flora & Fauna - The Plein Air Experience, 2023 may be available for sale by arrangement with the individual artists. Coffee, tea, and baked goods will be provided.

Falls Beginnings

 Yes, we all know summers over, but this is also the name of my quick paint plein air painting that was awarded second place. Also happy to say I got a Honorable Mention for Music on the Mound, another painting in the show.

Artists painted onsite Saturday morning on top of Grandads Bluff. Overcast skies and an impending storm didn't deter the hard core nature of artists determined to complete their mission. Most of us finish before the two hours were up since the rain drops began to fall. I think the northern parts of La Crosse County had more. The sun came out as we were leaving, of course.

It was a worthwhile and energizing event. One of the best parts is hearing what the Judges have to say about the different paintings. Lots of different approaches and mediums used.

My Three Entries

 

Amsterdam Prairie Remnant 11x14 oil framed $350

 After painting plein air for over a week, I feel I had at least three worthy of the Between the Bluffs Plein Air Event. This is my second time participating. I felt I learned a lot since last years event, but it still took painting almost everyday, sometimes twice. I now think I'm sticking to one painting a day for maximum results. 

This year I tried a sunset over Lake Onalaska. After searing the sun into my eyes I couldn't even tell what color I was painting, fail number one. I also thought I had a spot all figured out for some evening color and shadows. It was hot out and sweat dripped from my gloves all over my palette.

Sometimes you gotta know when to quit. I got two paintings of figures done by attending the Holmen music in Halfway Creek Park. People were so nice and they stayed pretty still for the music. There's a category for figures so I thought I'd give it a try.

 Last but not least one of my favorite views on Brice Prairie at The Red Pines on the Lake.

A bit overcast but I found the limited colors to be moving. Thanks Corinna for allowing paint on the property.

Last Day for the Music

 Sunday was the last day for music at Halfway Creek Park in Holmen, for the season.

I painted these pieces for the Between the Bluffs competition which happens this weekend.  I need to have my three entries framed up and turned in by Thursday. I've done two entries with figures in the landscape but will need to decide which one to submit. Any feedback helpful.

Between the Bluffs has Begun

 Me and my pochade box have been making the rounds in the neighborhood. From Brice Prairie to Holmen since Saturday morning I've been painting at four different sites. There's still three more on my list of stops and who knows what else will catch my eye.

On Sunday evening I returned to Halfway Creek Park for music and the chance to paint people. Usually I take my sketchbook, this time I needed to try painting. Lots of people asked and kind thoughts shared as I told them what I'm up to. 

Since one of the categories for the competition includes figures in the landscape I thought I'd give it a try.

Finding the Right time to Plein Air

 I've been scouting some places to plein air paint for the upcoming Between the Bluffs Plein Air Event right here in La Crosse area. Artists will be out painting as early as Friday evening until it's time to turn in there painting entries on Thursday Sept 22. I think I'll start out with some mornings as and work my way along for the next two weeks to some noon times and some evenings. I guess it will also depend on the weather.

Its even more fun to watch the quick paint competition.

Holmen Music

It's too hot for me with today's expected highs of 100. I think there are two more scheduled so I hope to make them, maybe even bring my paints. Hope you enjoy the holiday weekend.

We always enjoy going to the music at the Halfway Creek Park in Holmen on Sundays. While listening I like to bring along my sketchpad and share my work.

It's great to see there faces, I usually only get the image from behind. People stay pretty still while enjoying the show allowing me to draw.
