Frozen Bottoms

Frozen Bottoms 11x14 oil

This painting is a result of  a special invite to paint a view of the Black River Bottoms in Trempealeau for a little winter plein air. Thanks again Ellen for having me.

The sun was out but winter still had it's way with the wind whipping across the lowlands. I had just enough time to get my impression of the frozen waters and barren trees. A little time in the studio afterwards and I finished the painting.

This was my third attempt to paint plein air in the winter. Pretty proud of myself to still have all my fingers and toes.

Nice Ice

Ice Formations 8x10 oil

A winters walk along the black river lead me to paint this scene in my studio. At the edge of the river I found these abstract shapes with my cameras zoom. The ice forms interesting shapes from the melting snow,  reminding me of the ice caves they talk about in the Apostle Islands. Let your imagination take you there.

Enough about winter and ice, I don't know about you but I'm ready for spring.

Fishing Derby Day on Brice Prairie

Derby Day 8x10 oil

It was fun taking the time to get out and plein air paint during the 65th Annual Brice Prairie Fishing Derby. I found a spot at Mosey landing, a place that blocked the wind and gave me a view across the ice. I watched eager families come and go. Some even stopped by to see what I was doing and had nice things to say.

Got a lot of photos too of all the interesting methods of traveling on the ice and activities at the warming tent.

After getting the color notes and basic composition for my painting I continued to do some further adjustments when my hands warmed up the next day in my studio.

Into the Woods-Trempealeau Library Donation

Spring Unfurls 8x10 oil framed

Here's the framed painting I donated to the Trempealeau Library fundraiser-Into the Woods-A Taste of Trempealeau coming up Sunday February 23 from 4-6:30

I love the spring ephemeral flowers I find in the the woods at Perrot State Park. Depicted are the blood root flowers that unfurl in early spring, one among many blooms to not miss.

Thanks to Peg for her support of my art in the past She has been a great supporter of my art. Happy to continue to support the Shirley M. Wright Memorial Library and the efforts of librarians to keep the information flowing.

Color at the Pump House

Drive Home 11x14 oil

On the road home from Trempealeau is an eight mile stretch of Hwy 35. A road I've taken often coming home from working at Perrot in the past or a Thursday evening at the Trempealeau Hotel for Cribbage. One night as I was exploring inspiration for nocturne paintings it hit me all the colors you see in the dark while driving. From illuminated highway paint and reflective signs to the black asphalt taking on a purple cast to bright blue in the headlights and red from tail lights. A circus of color comes alive in the darkness.

Now showing at the Pump House Regional Arts Center juried  group exhibition called Color, along with many other artworks inspired by area artists.

Stop in to the Pump House Galleries to see the exhibition through February 22nd,2025.

Never Too Cold--for some

Never Too Cold 8x10 oil

This painting available at Red Pines Cafe

Next Saturday, February 1 is the 65th Annual Brice Prairie Conservation Association Fishing Derby. Since I must endure the winter while in Onalaska I mine as well make the best of it. Finding out what others enjoy in  winter leads me to ice fishing. Although I've never tried it myself it attracted my attention as a subject matter to paint. My donation to the fundraiser to help the lower Black River and Lake Onalaska.

                    Donated Painting

Brice Excursion-8x10 original oil framed. Painted two years ago after checking out the derby. Maybe someone will recognize this young fisherman. Hope to see you there.

Popping Up to Paint Out from Noon -3:00.

Catch me plein air painting at the fishing derby somewhere on the ice or along the banks of Lake Onalaska.  Looks like it will be warm enough for me.
