Challenges that face artists when painting outside run from annoying insects, changing weather and lately air quality. The recent fires in Northern Minnesota and Canada not only changed the color of the sky but also made it difficult to breath. Organizers of Plein Air Duluth made the decision to continue on with events with inside alternatives and an N95 mask for all participants. So the show went on. After a day the weather and conditions greatly improved.
I arrived a day earlier and excited to paint.
Sunsets are especially interesting with smoke filled skies. I also included one created in my studio that was affected by the Sahara Desert dust particles over the Fourth of July.

I attempted to capture the sunrise on the morning of Plein Air Duluth but the sun wasn't going to reveal itself amid the smokey haze. The atmosphere was dulled out and provide a more tonal approach to painting. Sorry about the photo image quality.
